Some people think the Fox River PCB cleanup
is just a local issue, but this is clearly not the case. The Fox River
is a major source of PCBs to all of Lake Michigan, affecting a four-state
area and millions of people along the shoreline.
| In addition, the Fox River and Green Bay release an estimated
4,000 pounds of PCBs to the air each year, according to the Green
Bay Mass Balance Study. Lake Michigan releases even more, due to its large
surface area. Researchers have found that PCBs can travel in the air for
up to 10 days before sunlight breaks them down, or they fall out with rain
and snow.
This means our "local" river is a global source of PCB
contamination, impacting untold numbers of people downwind. In particular,
people and wildlife in northern climates and cold mountainous areas are
at special risk, because the PCBs tend to selectively fall out more in
colder air. Supposedly pristine cold areas of the planet are accumulating
chemicals from far away. |
 |
Many northern cultures are highly dependent on high-fat
wild fish and game --- including marine mammals such as seals and whales
which are highly contaminated with PCBs due to the global air cycling.
