Georgia-Pacific legal settlements

Correction:The government lawyers now admit that "This Year's" 2002 settlement is worth only $10.86 million, not the $16.1 million which was claimed to the news media.  The public was told a highly inflated value.

Recreation Projects

$5.15 to $5.36 million estimated

(all in Brown County)

  • Village of Ashwaubenon --- Ashwaubenon Creek Conservancy:  5,000 foot trail, and in Ashwaubemay Park:  4,000 foot trail and nature center
  • Village of Howard --- Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve and Fort Howard Paper Foundation Wildlife Area:  20,000 foot trail and two 10-car parking lots to provide access to the trail
  • Village of Howard --- recreational access to Duck Creek and the waters of Green Bay, and/or other recreational enhancements within the Village of Howard.   Facilities such as trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds may be developed at locations to be determined with input from the village.
  • City of Green Bay --- Bay Beach Parkway: 3,000 foot trail and a picnic area with 10 tables, grills, and trash receptacles
  • City of Green Bay --- Bylsby Avenue Boat Launch: a double lane boat launch and 10-car parking lot
  • City of Green Bay --- Joliet Park: 2,000 foot trail, wooden fishing pier, boat launch, and 10-car parking lot
  • City of Green Bay --- Ken Euers Nature Area:  5,000 foot trail and picnic area with 10 tables, grills and trash receptacles
  • Deerfield Docks --- a multi-use boat dock adjacent to an existing boat launch
  • Metro Boat Launch --- fishing pier and wooden observation deck and picnic area with tables, grills and trash receptacles

Recreation Projects

  • Village of Ashwaubenon --- 1 mile long, 12 ft wide paved scenic trail along west side of the Fox River on land to be acquired by Village.  To be called Fox River Riverwalk, connecting National Railroad Museum and Ashwaubomay Park.  With benches and picnic tables. $500,000
  • Village of Howard --- new 2,156 square foot multipurpose buildingj, a marsh overlook platform and paving five miles of trail in 460 acre L.H. Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve on shore of Green Bay.  Building will have activity room for nature-related educational exhibits and programs, a small greenhouse and other areas needed for Preserve management and upkeep.  Public observation platform will overlook wetland and bay.  10-ft-wide trail paved for bikes and handicapped access. $375,000
  • Village of Howard --- acquisition and development of two parcels into a 27-acre park with the removal and relocation of existing buildings, landscaping, improved boat launch access and parking, a picneic sheelter and a 500-foot trail.  $510,000
  • City of Green Bay --- 500-foot long, 8-foot wide paved scenic trail, a boat dock/canoe-kayak launch and/or fishing pier and parking at Leicht Park (park planned for 2.6 acre site on west bank of Fox River) $600,000 
  • City of Green Bay --- Construction of a barrier-free fishing pier near Porlier Street.  $200,000
  • Village of Allouez --- acquisition of 30 acre parcel for a park west of East River.  Site preparation, landscaping, picnic area, 870 feet of trail, an access road and parking lot, boat launch or canoe landing, and fishing pier.  $659,000
  • Village of Allouez --- 1,000-ft long, 12-ft wide paved scenic trail along west side of the East River that will serve as the Allouez portion of the East River Trail Development Project.  $20,000
  • Town of Bellevue --- acquisition of river frontage or easements along East River.  Construction of 12-ft wide, 3000-ft long asphalt pedestrian-bike trail between Manderly Way and Hoffman Rd.$220,000
  • Town of Bellevue --- street improvements, parking lot, small open shelter, picnic tables at trail head (northern end of East River Parkway Trail.   $50,000
  • City of DePere --- Renovation of unusable boat launch facility at Brown Co. Fairgrounds, construction of floating dock, improved access road, parking lot and 3/4 mile trail.  $676,000
    City of DePere --- 4,400-foot long, 12-foot wide paved scenic trail along west side of East River.  $90,000

  • Oneida Lake --- Dedicated funding for feasibility investigation and design (only Phase I) of the construction of a 35-40 acre artificial Oneida Lake project.  (On the Oneida Tribal Reservation - Brown and Outagamie Counties)  $300,000
  • Habitat and Water Quality Enhancement Fund --- projects may include stream bank corridor easements and improvements, wetland restoration, in-stream improvements, non-point pollution agricultural controls, or similar actions to improve habitat or water quality

* Note the discrepancies between last year's $ values and this year's:

  • Last year's recreation projects, fewer of them, were estimated to be worth much more money than this year's projects.  (Were we being misled last year?)
  • Last year's land acquisition value for the Peshtigo Marsh property was much lower than this year's high value.  (Are we being misled now?)
